our trade we must be all the more entitled to that support when it is realized that the opium which we import is bought from the Goverment of India on the olear understanding that no interference with the freedom of its sale in China would be allowed,

In view of this strange attitude taken by Mr. Jamieson from the very beginning we have come to the conclusion that further reference

to him would be useless,

We shall be obliged if you will be good enough to take such steps as the Chamber may consider necessary for the protection of our

interests.

Since writing the above our representative, Mr. Ellis, bas re-

turned from Canton and he informs us that Mr. Jamieson maintains that China has perfect liberty to take any measurez she pleases with regard to the foreign opium trade even so far as to stop altogether its sale provided the same measures are taken with regard to the native drug.
